Saira Afzal Tarar is a Pakistani politician who has been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since 2008. She is affiliated with the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), a major political party in Pakistan. She was first elected to the National Assembly from Constituency NA-102 (Hafizabad-I) in 2008 and was re-elected in 2013 and 2018.
Born on June 7, 1966, in Hafizabad city, District Hafizabad, Saira Afzal Tarar is the daughter of Mian Afzal Hussain Tarar and the daughter-in-law of Muhammad Rafiq Tarar, the former President of Pakistan. She is married to Mr. Muhammad Irfan Tarar, a retired Director General of the Intellectual Property Organisation of Pakistan. They have three children.
Saira Afzal Tarar holds an MSc in Home Economics (Housing and Interior Designing) from the College of Home Economics Lahore, completed in 1991. She completed her matriculation from Queen Mary School in 1983 and later earned a diploma in Islamic Studies from Al Huda International in 2003.
Before entering politics, Saira Afzal Tarar worked as a teacher at Pakistan Islamia Secondary School in Sharjah, UAE, from 1998 to 1999. She then transitioned into politics and became a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
From 2013 to 2018, Saira Afzal Tarar served as the Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination. During her tenure, she focused on improving the accessibility and quality of healthcare services in Pakistan.
She has also held various significant positions in the National Assembly, including membership in the Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the Standing Committee on Local Government, the Assembly Standing Committee on Housing, and the Special Committee on Millennium Developmental Goals. Additionally, she was a member of the Women Caucus of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
Saira Afzal Tarar has received several awards for her contributions, including the USAID Award on World Tuberculosis Day in 2016, an award on World No Tobacco Day in 2015 by WHO, and recognition from Dow University of Health Sciences during the 6th Annual Research Day in 2015. She also received the Best Coordination Award from the Rawalpindi Islamabad Bureau’s Journalists Association in 2015.
Saira Afzal Tarar is a dedicated member of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) N. She holds positions in the party’s Central Working Committee and serves as the President of PML N District Hafizabad.
